It’s no secret that first responders are at an increased risk for cancer. The chemical exposures, shift-work schedule, stress, and lifestyle of the job all play contributing roles. While there is much of the job that you can’t control, proper nutrition is something you can.
Below are some great foods to try to include regularly in your diet, not just for cancer prevention, but for overall health:
Cabbage family foods: broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage – These cruciferous vegetables all contain a property called “sulforaphane” which is a plant-compound shown to have anti-cancer properties.
Garlic: Allicin is the active component of garlic that studies have shown is able to kill off cancer cells.
Soy (whole food form): edamame, tofu: There is a lot of confusion surrounding soy and cancer but studies have shown that soy (not processed but in its whole food form) contain properties like fiber and isoflavones that may reduce the risk of developing cancer.
Flaxseed, fatty fish and other omega 3s: Some studies have shown that people who had diets rich in fatty fish had a significantly lower risk of prostate and colon cancers.
Spices, herbs, turmeric: Loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, spices are a great way to increase the flavor of foods without potentially harmful additives.
Green tea: Green tea contains compounds epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and catechins, which may help prevent tumor development.
Berries: Berries are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, posses anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidants that can all help combat cancer.
Tomatoes: Tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene which gives tomatoes that bright color and also contains anticancer properties.
Citrus fruits: Eating citrus fruits has been associated with certain cancers including pancreatic, stomach and those in the upper-respiratory tract.
While it would be impossible to list all the amazing foods out there with health benefits, when it doubt, try to eat as many different (naturally-occurring) colors as you can.
